Adequate tissue sampling is the most essential element of endoscopy. The results of biopsies significantly influence clinical decisions and patient management. This DVD will first review the indications and basic techniques of conventional forceps biopsy by specific GI tract location and by disease such as Barrett's esophagus and benign/malignant gastric ulcers. Participants will be introduced to clinical situations where advanced tissue sampling techniques help with diagnosis including strip biopsy, endoscopic resection of mucosal and submucosal lesions and EUS guided needle biopsy. Finally, there will be discussion on the recent clinical application of optical biopsies using confocal endomicroscopy.
Upon completion of this educational activity, participants will be able to:
o Discuss the indications and complications related to tissue sampling.
o Discuss which tissue sampling methods are needed for specific clinical situations.
